Child Labor in America
I know that child labor was terrible. Children got very very very bad injuries. Also the children got very little money each day. Plus the children only got off on Sundays, and sometimes the children were too tired to play. In 1832, the New England Association of Farmers, Mechanics and other Workingmen resolve that, "Children should not be allowed to labor in the factories from morning 'till night, without any time for healthy recreation and mental cure," for it, "endangers their well-being and health." In 1836, Massachusetts required under 15 working in factories to attend schools at least 3 months/year. In 1924, Congress passed a constitutional amendment giving the federal government authority to regulate child labor, but too many ratified it and it never took effect. In 1937, the second attempt to ratify constitutional amendment giving federal government authority to regulate child labor dropped just short of getting necessary votes. In 1938, for the first time, minimum ages employment and hours of work for children were regulated by federal law.
